Mitosis B2 Flashcards
Why do eukaryotes require a constant supply of new cells?
For growth, development and repair.
What are the 3 stages of the cell cycle?
- Growth
- DNA replication and mitosis
- Cytokinesis (division)
What happens to the cell during the growth stage?
The cell increases in size which increases the number of sub-cellular structures it contains.
What happens during the mitosis stage of the cell cycle?
The DNA is duplicated so that the 2 new cells will be able to have a full set of chromosomes.
What happens during mitosis?
The cell duplicated chromosomes so that they form an X shape. The cell lines up the 46 chromosomes along the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull each arm to one pole of the cell.
What happens during cytokinesis?
The cell membrane and cytoplasm pull apart making 2 daughter cells which are genetically identical to each other and the parent cell.
