Nervous System- The Brain(Complete) Flashcards
What is the main role of the brain?
To receive impulses and decide on a suitable response.
How is the brain protected?
By the bones of the spine and skull.
The meninges- are 3 protective membranes made up of strong connective tissue.
The cerebrospinal fluid is between the two inner meninges and acts as a shock absorber.
What is meningitis?
Inflammation of the meninges and can be viral or bacterial.
Bacterial meningitis is more severe- typical symptoms are stiffness of the neck and vomitting.
It is treated by antibiotics
Viral meninges is less severe and usually just result in a headache.
It is not treated and recovery can take up to 2 weeks.
Where is the cerebrum positioned?
The forebrain.
Where is the cerebellum positioned?
The hindbrain.
Where is the medulla oblongata positioned?
Connects the spinal cord to the brain.
Where is the hypothalamus positioned?
Under the thalamus and connects to the pituitary gland.
Where is the pituitary gland positioned?
Attached to the hypothalamus and is not part of the brain.
Give a description of the cerebrum.
The largest part of the brain.
Contains grey matter on the outside with mostly cell bodies.
Contains white matter on the inside with many axons.
Give a description of the cerebellum.
The second-largest part of the brain and is highly folded.
Give a description of the medulla oblongata.
Has clusters of nerve fibres.
Give a description of the pituitary gland.
Is an endocrine gland as it is ductless and secretes hormones.
What is the function of the cerebrum?
To control voluntary actions like movement, emotions and memory.
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Maintains balance and coordination.
What is the function of the medulla oblongata?
Controls involuntary actions like coughing, breathing or sneezing.
