Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
The smallest unit of living matter.
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with common functions.
What is an organ?
Two or more tissues working together to carry out specific functions.
What is an organ system?
A set of organs working together to carry out specific functions for an organism.
What are the names of the plant tissues?
Vascular tissue.
Dermal tissue.
Ground tissue.
Meristematic tissue.
Give examples of vascular tissue and the function.
Xylem and phloem.
Transport and support.
Give examples of dermal tissue and it’s function.
Epidermis of the leaf, stem and root.
Protection,e.g when plant loses water.
Give examples of ground tissue and it’s functions.
Mesophyll cells of leaf and root Cortex.
Photosynthesis in the leaf.
Food storage in the roots.
Support for turgid plant.
Give examples of meristematic tissue and it’s function.
Root and shoot tips.
Cells are constantly dividing by mitosis for growth to occur.
What are the 4 types of animal tissue?
Epithelial tissue.
Nervous tissue.
Muscle tissue.
Connective tissue.
Describe epithelial tissue.
A sheet of cells which covers the body surface or lines the body cavity.
Forms the outer layer of the skin.
Lines the respiratory and digestive systems.
Forms the pericardium of the heart.
Describe nervous tissue.
Contains nerve cells called neurons which transport impulses to and from the central nervous system.
What is connective tissue?
Consists of cell fragments in a liquid or solid matrix. Different types of collagen is found in the matrix.
Where is connective tissue found?
In blood.
In adipose tissue.
In cartilage.
In the tendons and ligaments.
What are the roles of connective tissue.
Insulation.
