Nervous system I Flashcards
what is the CNS made up of?
brain and spinal cord
what is the PNS made up of?
all of the nervous outwith the brain and spinal cord:
- somatic nervous system
- autonomic nervous system
what is the function of a dendrite?
receives signals from other neurons
what is the function of an axon?
sends signals to other neurons
what is the function of a motor neuron?
sends signals to our muscles telling them to move
what is the function of a sensory neuron?
sends signals from sensory organs
what is the function of a relay neuron?
connects neurons to other neurons
what is the brain responsible for?
- thinking
- learning
- memory
- emotion
what is the function of the cerebral cortex?
- planning
- reasoning
- language
- recognising sound and images
- memory
what is the function of the cerebellum?
- important for coordination
- precision
- timing of movement
what is the function of the corpus callosum?
connects brains right and left hemispheres
what is the function of the brain stem?
- regulates HR, breathing, sleep cycles and emotions
what are the functions of the cerebrum?
- mental activities
- sensory perception
- initiation and control
what are the 3 membranes (meninges) which enclose the brain and spinal cord?
- inner layer- pia mater
- middle layer- arachnoid mater
- outer layer- dura mater
where is the midbrain located and what is its function?
- located between the cerebrum above and the pons below
- relay station
where is the pons located and what is its function?
- located infront of cerebellum below midbrain and above medulla
- autonomic NS
where is the medulla located?
lies above the foramen magnum and attaches to the spinal cord
what is the function of the medulla?
several cranial nerves arise and form groups of neuron cell bodies in the medulla
what is the cerebellum located?
situated behind the pons
where is white matter located in the brain?
inner section
where is grey matter located in the brain?
outer section
describe the characteristics of the spinal cord?
- elongated cylindrical part of CNS
- lies within vertebral canal
- continuous with medulla
- approx. 18” long
what is the function of the spinal cord?
- link between brain and organs
- conveys impulses to and from brain
where is white matter located in the spinal cord?
outer section
where is grey matter located in spinal cord?
inner section
describe the characteristics of grey matter in the spinal cord?
- resembles H shape
- motor nerves situated in anterior horn
- sensory nerve fibres enter spinal cord via posterior horn
describe the characteristics of white matter in the spinal cord?
- arranged in columns
- formed by sensory nerve fibres ascending to the brain
