utilization of food to enable the body to build, maintain and repair body tissue, and to supply heat and energy for the body
what are some essentials of the diet?

what are some functions of water in the diet?
- provides moist environment for body cells

what is the main function of carbohydrates?
- provide heat and energy
- if eaten in excess, converted to fat and stored
in terms of absorption, what is fat broken down into
fatty acids and glycerol
what is the function of proteins?
- growth and repair of body cells
- synthesis of enzymes, plasma proteins and antibodies
what do complete (first class) proteins contain?
all essential amino acids to maintain health
what do incomplete (second class) proteins contain?
do not contain all amino acids

- calcium
- iron
- phosphorus

- haemostasis
- formation of bones and teeth
what is the function of iron in the body?
formation of haemoglobin
what is the function of phosphorus in the body?
associated with bone and tooth formation

essential for thyroid gland secretions
what is the function of sodium in the body?
- maintenance of body fluid balance, contraction of muscles, transmission of nerve impulses
what is the function of potassium in the diet?
similar to sodium
what are the fat soluble vitamins?
vitamin A,D,E,K
what are water soluble vitamins?
vitamin B complex and vitamin C
what is the function of vitamin A in the body?
- essential for growth
- maintenance of epithelium
- vision in dim light
what is the function of vitamin D in the body?
- formation of healthy bones
what is the result of a Vit D deficiency?
rickets, may result in delayed tooth eruption
what is the function of Vit K in the body?
- formation of prothrombin and other factors in blood clotting
what is the function of Vit C in the body?
formation of collagen
what is the result of a Vit C deficiency?
- gingival and periodontal issues
- scurvy
