Endocrine II Flashcards
What is the function of the adrenal glands
- Controls blood sugars
- burns protein and fat
- reacts to stressors /major injury
- regulates BP
Where are the adrenal glands located?
Situated above the kidney
What are the different parts of the adrenal glands?
- cortex- outer part
- medulla- inner part
What does the adrenal cortex produce?
Adrenocorticocoids
What are the 3 types of adrenocorticoids?
- glucocortoids
- mineralocorticoids
- sex hormones
What are the different types of glucocorticoids?
- hydrocortisone
- corticosterone
- cortisone
What are some of the effects of glucocortoids?
- balance blood sugar levels
- breakdown of fats into fatty acids and glycerol for energy
- promotes absorption of sodium and water from kidneys
What is an example of a mineralocorticoid?
Aldosterone
What is the function of aldosterone?
Maintenance of salt, water and electrolyte balance
What does aldosterone stimulate?
Sodium re-absorption and potassium excretion from kidneys
What are sex hormones?
They are mainly androgens (steroid hormones) which affects libido and gaining weight
What is the function of sex hormones
Sex hormones contribute to the onset of puberty
What is an example of a disease caused by hyper secretion of glucocosterioids?
Cushings syndrome- uncommon but can affect people taking steroids
What is an example of a disease caused by hypo secretion of glucocosterioids?
Addisons disease- extremely little adrenal function which causes low blood glucose & muscle weakness
What is an example of a disease caused by hyper secretion of mineralocorticoids?
- conns syndrome- tumour affecting adrenal gland which causes HPB, cardiac arrhythmia & muscle weakness
