NERVOUS SYSTEM DISEASES Flashcards
Multiple sclerosis
manifest as multiple hard plaques of degeneration of the insulating layer of nerve fibers in the CNS
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
A stroke, caused by a blood vessel in brain bursting or a clot may arise in brain blood vessel or elsewhere and travel to get struck in brain vessel.
Transient Ischemic attack
“not quite enough blood”, short period in which brain does not get enough blood supply, can have same symptoms as stroke.
Epilepsy
“Seizures”, “Convulsions”,
Aphasia
Loss of speech, caused by damage to left side of brain. (Motor speech area)
Neurologist
Physician specializing in diseases of brain, spinal core and nerves.
Lumbar puncture or tap (LP)
Introducing needle between lower bony vertebrae of our spinal column allow physician to smaple fluid (CSF) surrounding brain and spinal cord. Used to diagnose presence of bacteria
Brain scan
Introducing radioactive element into blood can image possible tumors in the brain.
Electroencephalography
Recording of the brain’s electrical activity, used to diagnose different types of seizure disorders such as epilepsy, brain tumors.
Computed tomography (CT)
Specialized X-ray machine that takes multiple images of a body from different angles and has computer to integrate multiple images into “slices” of body. Resolution much better than standard X-rays. Better differentiation of types of tissue
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Patient is placed into strong magnetic field. Radio. computer analyzes the info to show subtle differences in tissue structure to produce high resolution image to better differentiate soft tissue, such as a tumor within the liver.
