Musculoskeletal system diseases Flashcards
Arthritis
condition where tissues become less resilient to wear and tear and start to degenerate and manifest as swelling.
Osteoporosis
Porous bone, bane of the old, especially women.
Osteomalacia
Soft bones, if not enough calcium is deposited during early childhood development.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
condition where repetitive flexing of the wrist may inflame and thicken the ligament over the “tunnel” through the carpal (wrist) bone trapping and compressing the nerve.
Tendonitis
Repeated strain on tendon (muscle to bone) can inflame the tendon resulting in pain and difficulty with movement.
Rotator cuff tear
Muscles surrounding the shoulder joint have tendons, and if you move to fast such as tennis, you can tear one of them resulting in pain and decreased mobility of the shoulder.
Bursitis
Bursa, small closed bag with minimum amount of lube serves as shock absorber, inflammation leads to pain and immobility in a joint area
Muscular dystrophy
Group of inherited disease in which the muscles that control movement progressively weaken.
Myasthenia gravis
autoimmune disease that involves production of antiboides that interfere with nerves stimulating msucle contractions. Face and neck muscles most obviously affected.
Lupus erthematosus
autoimmune disease wherein the body produces antiboides against a variety of organs, especially connective tissues of skin and joints
