What does the statement “Nursing is an art and science” mean?
It means Nursing is a mixture of medical knowledge with Human compassion.
What does it mean that nursing is a profession? What does it mean that nurses need to exhibit professionalism?
It means it has an organization that sets standards for it (ANA). You are not working with real people so you need to be mindful of the way you conduct yourself.
What is nursing ethics? What is the purpose of the nursing code of ethics?
A statement of philosophical ideals of right and wrong that define the principles you will use to provide care to your patient.
How does the Nurse Practice Act legally guide nursing practice?
It sets a standard of what nurses should be capable of. It protects the public from unqualified and unsafe nurses and sets your scope of practice.
What is the difference in clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and clinical judgment? How do each of these assist you in providing safe nursing care?
Clinical reasoning – Describe the process by which nurses collect cues, process the info, come to an understanding of a patient problem or situation, plan and implement interventions, evaluate outcomes, and reflect on and learn from the process
Critical thinking – The ability to think in a systematic and logical manner with openness to question and reflect on the reasoning process
Clinical judgment – A thought process that allows nurses to arrive at a conclusion based on objective and subjective information about a patient.
What does it mean that nurses’ function only in their legal “Scope of Practice”?
Means that nurses only do things they are legally allowed to do to patients.
What are the five steps of the nursing process? What are examples of nursing activities
related to each of these steps.

What competencies assist the nurse in providing safe nursing care? Explain these competencies in detail.
Cognitive competencies – Offer a scientific rationale for a patient plan of care, select interventions most likely to yield desired outcomes. They are critical thinking and decision-making skills such as problem solving and clinical decision making.
Technical skills/ Psychomotor competencies – Use psychomotor skills to provide care, use technical equipment with competence and ease to achieve goals with minimal distress to pts. Integration of cognitive and motor activities.
Interpersonal competencies – Communicate with the patient, family and members of health care team. Used to develop a trusting relationship, expressing caring and communicating clearly with patients and their families.
Ethical and legal competencies – Are trusted to act in ways that advance interest of patients
