Nervous System and Tissues Flashcards
What are the 3 functions of the Nervous System?
sensory input, integration, and motor output
What are the 2 divisions of the Nervous System?
CNS and PNS
What are the 2 functional divisions in the Nervous System?
Sensory/afferent- to CNS from sensory receptors and Motor/afferent- from CNS to effector organs
What are the 2 motor divisions in the PNS?
Somatic: voluntary and control skeletal muscles and
Autonomic nervous system: involuntary and regulates activity of smooth and cardiac muscle and glands
What are the 2 principal types of nervous tissues?
neuroglia: non-excitable cells that surround and wrap neurons and neurons: excitable cells that transmit electrical signals
Are neuroglia or neurons more common?
neuroglia
What are the neuroglia in the PNS?
astrocytes, oligodendroytes. microglial, and ependymal
What are the two types of neuroglia in PNS?
Schwann and Satellite
What are the functions in the oligodendrocytes?
processes form myelin sheath around CNS
Which neuroglia line CSF cavities of brain and spinal cord?
ependymal cells
Which cells are the defensive cells in the CNS?
Microglial cells which phagocytize microorganisms and cell debris and touch and monitor health of neurons
What are the functions of astrocytes?
Most abundant that support and brace neurons, assist with exchanges between capillaries and neurons and control chemical environment
