nervous system and reflexes Flashcards
What are the 5 main areas of the brain stem?
Cervicial, thoracic, lumbar, sacral
3 main areas of the reflex arc
receptors, spinal chord, effectors
what is the afferent response?
when neurones carry signals from the stimulus to the spinal chord
what is the efferent response
when neurones carry signals from the spinal cord to the muscles or glands ( effectors)
For contraction of muscles to occur what must happen in the relay system?
the motor neuron must be switched on
for relaxation to occur what must happen to the motor neuron
it must be switched off
how many pairs of cranial nerves does the peripheral nervous system have
12
how many pairs of spinal nerves does the peripheral nervous system have
31
What does a chemoreceptor detect
chemicals
what does a photoreceptor detect
light
what does a thermoreceptor detect
temperature
what does a nociceptor detect
damage to the skin
what does a mechanoreceptor detect
mechanical (tubes/ joints)
what does a baroreceptor detect
pressure in blood vessels
what is stimuli intensity coded by
The frequency of action potentials and the number of receptors activated
