Nervous System Flashcards
What’s the role of the nervous system
Helps maintain homeostasis, response for all behaviours, memories and movements
What are the divisions of the nervous system
The cns, pns which is divided into the somatic sensory and motor and autonomic sensory and motor neurons
Autonomic motor neurons are then divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
What’s the function of neurons
Conduct nerve impulses
Analyse information
Direct body’s response
Sending, thinking and controlling muscle activity
What are the functions of neurolgia
Support and protect neurons
Form a myelin sheath around neurons
What are the functions of interneurons
Process and integrate info, store memories and direct responded
What are the components of a reflex arc
Sensory receptors pick up a stimulus and a sensory neuron relays the info to a motor neuron which stimulates and effector response
What’s the function of the cerebrum
Analyses info for thinking and learning
Store memories
Sensory awareness
Initiates voluntary movement
What’s the function of the cerebellum
Provides smooth movements
Regulates posture
Maintains balance
What’s the function of the brain stem
Controls basic activities for survival eg heartbeat, breathing
What’s the function of the frontal lobe
Processes emotions
Problem solving
Personality
Verbal communications
What’s the function of the parietal lobe
Contains primary sensory cortex
Conscious awareness of sensations
What’s the function of the occipital lobe
Visual cortex
What’s the functions of the temporal lobe
Smell, hearing and taste
Auditory info received here and language communications
What’s the functions of the hypothalamus
Controls and regulates activities of the autonomic system
Regulates body temp, food and water intake and thirst
What’s the function of the meninges
Protection of the brain
