Lymphatic System/ Immunity Flashcards
What’s the functions of the lymphatic system
To drain excess interstitial fluid
To destroy microbes and foreign cells
To transport lipids and fat soluble vits from small intestine into the blood
How does lymph form
Plasma leaks out of blood capillaries and is excess interstitial fluid that flows into lymph capillaries
What is the flow of lymph?
Lymph vessels carry lumph to lymph nodes and then to lymph ducts and from there into the bloodstream
What can affect the flow of lymph
- Movement of skeletal muscle pumps
- Respiratory pumps
- presence of valves in vessels
- rate of formation of lymph
What an immune response?
It’s the response to the introduction of foreign substance into the body or cellular changes
What’s the difference between passive and active immunity?
Active is when the body’s B lymphocytes produce antibodies in response to antigens and passive is when ready made antibodies are introduced into the body
What’s the function of lymph nodes?
They contain macrophages that destroy pathogens and stimulate antibodies
What’s the function of lymphocytes
B lymphocytes develop into antibody producing plasma cells or provide immunity
What’s the function of a fever in response to an infection?
The hypothalamus raises the core body temperature in an attempt to make reproducing and living conditions of pathogens uncomfortable and nonlivable
