Endocrine System Flashcards
What’s the function of the endocrine system
To control and coordinate body functions via hormones
What’s the function of the thyroid gland
To produce calcitonin which lowers blood calcium levels
To produce thyroxine which regulates metabolic rate
What’s the function of the parathyroid gland
To produce parathormone which increases blood calcium levels
What’s the function of the pituitary gland
To produce growth hormone which enhances growth
What’s the function of the adrenal glands
To produce adrenaline which increase heart rate
To produce cortisol to respond to stress and help heal and injury recovery
What’s the function of of the pancreas gland
To produce insulin which lowers blood glucose levels
Produces glucagon which converts glycogen to glucose
What’s the ovary gland function
To produce oestrogen which matures egg and develops secondary sex characteristics
What’s the function of the teste gland
To produce testosterone which produces speed and develops secondary male sexual characteristics
How does negative feedback with the endocrine system work
When the hormones are released due to a stimulus to try maintain homeostasis
How does positive feedback and the endocrine system work
When hormones are released to keep a stimulus happening
What’s the difference between and endocrine and exocrine gland
Endocrine glands secrete hormones into the bloodstream whereas exocrine glands secrete into ducts which carry secretions to body cavities
