Nervous system Flashcards
What is a nerve cell called?
Neuron
What is a neuron?
Specialized for conduction. They send signals via a nervous impulse.
What is the cell body of a neuron called ?
Perikaryon or soma
CNS
Brain &spinal cord
Astrocyte
supporting cell seen in the CNS
- Star shaped
- involved in the BBB
Basket cells
A type of neuron seen in the cerebellum
Neuroglia
- supporting cells in the CNS
- A.K.A glial cells or glia
Schwann cells
Responsible for myelination of neurons in the PNS
Ganglion
Collection of nerve cell bodies outside of the CNS
Satellite cells
Found in the ganglia of the PNS
Unipolar Neuron
- Has one process which branches off it
- a.k.a pseudo unipolar neuron
- sensory neurons
Bipolar Neuron
- has one axon and many dendrites
- motor neurons and interneurons
Interneurons
- Neurons between sensory and motor neurons
- a.k.a internuncial neurons
Examples of Neuroglia
Astrocytes, ependymal cells, oligodendrocytes, and microglia
What is the most abundant neuroglia?
Astrocytes
Ependymal cells
-Line the ventricles and spinal Canal
Oligodendrocytes
-Form myelin in the CNS
Microglia
CNS macrophages
Meninges
Three connective tissue covers which surround the brain and spinal cord.
Meninges in order
Dura –> Arachnoid mater–> Pia Mater
Dura Mater
- outer matrix
- composed of dense irregular connective tissue
Dura Mater
- outer matrix
- composed of dense irregular connective tissue
Arachnoid Mater
Made up of a delicate spider web like connective tissue
Pia Mater
- innermost
- covers the brain intimately
White matter
- myelinated nerve fibers
- outer portion of the spinal cord.
Gray matter
- neuro cells bodies and associated dendrites or unmyelinated axons
- The cortex
- In conglomerations within the cerebrum and cerebellum where it is called nuclei.
- central portion of the spinal cord in a butterfly shape.
Nodes of Ranvier
Gaps that occur in the myelin sheath
Neurofilaments
A type of intermediate filaments seen in neurons which provide rigidity
What is the outer part of the brain called?
Cortex
What is the conglomerations of gray mater deep within the cerebrum and cerebellum are called ?
Nuclei
Where is CSF found?
In the subarachnoid space ( between the arachnoid and the Pia mater)
What is the primary component of myelin?
lipid
How is myelin formed?
It is formed by the cell wrapping itself around the axon.
Endoneurium
Surrounds a nerve fiber
What is myelin primarily ?
primarily the plasma membrane of either the Schwann cells (in the PNS) or the oligodendrocytes (in the CNS).
Perineurium
Surrounds a bundle of nerve fibers
Epineurium
Surrounds a nerve
