Female Reproductive system Flashcards
Components of the Female Reproductive system
Uterus , Fallopian tube ,Vagina , Ovary
What is the outer layer of the uterus called ?
Perimetrium
What is the middle layer of the uterus ?
- Muscular layer
- myometrium
What is the inner layer of the uterus ?
- endometrium
- undergoes cyclical changes
Lower portion of the uterus
Cervix
Body
Bulk of the uterus
Fallopian tube
A.K.A oviduct
Vagina
Lined by stratified squamous epithelium
Bartholin’s glands
-A.K.A greater vestibular glands
homologous to bulbourethral glands in males
Skene’s glands
A.K.A Lesser vestibular glands
Gametogenesis
production of gametes
Oogenesis
Gametogenesis in females
Ovary
Organ where gametogenesis occurs
Ovulation
- Release of an oocyte
- occurs every 28-30 days
Oocytes
Developing gametes
Ova
Mature Gamete
layers of the ovary
- Lined by germinal epithelium
- tunica albuginea =connective tissue
- cortex = outer layer
- medulla =inner layer
Primordial Follicle
Primary oocyte in the outer region of the cortex
- arrested in the first meiotic prophase
- surrounded by flattened follicular epithelial cells
Primary Follicle
surrounding of flattened (squamous) follicular cells becoming cuboidal and the oocyte becomes bigger.
Secondary follicle
-Antrum present
Graffian Follicle
- Mature
- ovulated
Theca follicle
The connective tissue layer around the primary follicle
Zona Pellucida
The acidophilic glycoprotein coat surrounding the oocyte
Follicular cells
Granulosa cells
Corpus Luteum
- Yellow body
- forms from a Graffian Follicle after release of the oocyte
Corpus Albicans
- White body
- Corpus lute
