Nervous System Flashcards
What are three main processes of the nervous system
Collecting sensory input
Processing and interpreting that input
Respond appropriately to that input
What is the nervous system
The nervous system controls and coordinates functions throughout the body
What is the CNS
The central nervous system
What are the detained parts of the CNS
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Medulla oblongata
Spinal cord
What does the cerebrum do
Voluntary or conscious activities of the judgement
What role does the cerebellum have
Coordinates and balances the actions of muscle
What role does the medulla oblongata have
Controls involuntary actions like blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and swallowing
What role does the spinal cord have
The main communications link between the brain and the rest of the body
What is the PNS
The peripheral nervous system
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of
Sensory division and motor division
What else does the PNS include
All sensory neurons, motor neurons and sense organs
How is info transmitted?
Info passes from receptors along cells called neurons
What is a neuron
A nerve cell
What shape do nerve cells take
They’re long and thin to carry messages called impulses
What are three types of neurons
Sensory
Motor
Relay
