Sensory Pathways
Spinothalamic and posterior column
includes sensory receptors in skin, tendons and viscera
Cortiocospinal/pyramidal tract
conveys impulse from motor centers, cerebral cortex to spinal cord
Upper motor system- permits skills and purposeful movements
Diseases- CVA, MS, CP
extrapyramidal tracts
CN and SN
lower motor system- maintains muscle tone and gross body movements
Diseases- polio, lesions, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als)
MSE ( Mental status exam)
obtained through regular Hx, behavior, affect, congnition, thought process
Mini-mental exam
concentration on cognitive function not mood or behavior., valid detector of dementia and delirium
graphethesia
ability to understand writing on the skin
cremasteric reflex
contraction of the cremaster muscle when inside of the thigh is touched
Kinesthesus
awareness of the position of the body and body parts
Abdominal reflex
stroking down of abdomen towards the umbilicus, contraction of the abdominal walls
