Nervous System Flashcards
What is one nerve cell called and what is it
They are called neurons and they are the basic functional units of the nervous system
What are neurons made of
A cell body , axons and branches call dendrites
What do you dendrites do
Receive messages from other neurons and send them through the cell body
What do axons do
Carry messages away from the cell body
What are the messages that are transferred through the neuron
Called ?
An impulse
What are the three kinds of neurons and what do they do
Sensory: to text changes in the environment, receives information, impulse sent to brain or spinal cord
Relay: connect sensory and motor send impulses from sensory to motor
Motor: conduct impulses from your brain or spinal cord to muscles or glands throughout your body
What are the two sections of the nervous system
Central nervous system
Peripheral nervous system
What are the three parts of the brain
The cerebrum
The cerebellum
The brainstem
What does the peripheral nervous system do
It connects body to brain and spinal cord as 12 pairs of nerves from the brain and 31 pairs of nerves from the spinal cord. As bundles of sensory and motor neurons held together by connective-tissue
Describe what kind of receptors eyes skin tongue nose and ears have
Eyes - photoreceptors - light Skin - thermo receptor - heat Pressure receptor -texture Tongue - chemoreceptors -chemical Nose -chemo receptors - chemical Ears-pressure receptor -sound waves
What is a reflex action
And action we carry out without conscious thought
What path do impulses in a reflex action take
The reflex arc
What do you really neurons do and where can they be found
There are crucial part to the reflex Ark
They connect the sensory neuron to the motor neuron
They can be found in the grey matter of the spinal-cord and in the mid brain
What is the advantage of a reflex
A quicker response to the stimuli
Describe the process of the synapse
The nerve impulses arrives at the synapse
The neurotransmitter is released into the synapse
Neurotransmitter diffusers across the synapse
Neurotransmitter binds with the receptor of the membrane of the post synaptic neuron
Binding of neurotransmitter to the receptor stimulates impulse in the post synaptic neuron
