Hormones Flashcards
name the functions of insulin and glucagon and where they’re produced
produced in the pancreas
lower and raise blood glucose levels
name the function of adrenaline and where it’s produced
adrenal glands
prepares the body for stressful or physically straining situations - “fight or flight” response
name the hormones produced in the ovaries and their functions
oestrogen controls development of female secondary sexual characteristics
progesterone regulates the menstrual cycle
where is testosterone produced and what is its function
tested
controls development of male secondary sexual characteristics involved in sperm production
how does adrenaline prepare your body for action
- increases breathing rate and depth to get more oxygen into your body and remove excess CO2
- increases heart rate and volume, sending more blood to the muscles for respiration and removing more waste products
- blood is diverted from the digestive system to the muscles
- glycogen in liver is converted to glucose in the blood
- mental awareness and speed of reactions increase
- pupils dilate to make your eyes more sensitive to movement
- body hair stands on end (makes other mammals look bigger)
what’s the difference between glucagon glycogen and glucose
glucagon - hormone that helps break down glycogen
glycogen - carbohydrate stored in the liver
glucose - sugar carried in the blood
what happens when blood sugar levels rise
insulin is released
insulin turns glucose into glycogen, which is stored in muscles and liver
what happens when sugar levels drop
glucagon is released
glucagon turns stored glycogen into glucose
name the function of ADH and where it’s produced
produced in pituitary gland
controls the water content of the blood by its effect on the kidneys
