Homeostasis Flashcards
What happens if the blood glucose level is too high
The pancreas secretes insulin. The insulin converts glucose to glycogen. Glycogen is stored in the muscles in the liver
What is the only energy source the brain and nervous system use
Glucose
What is vasodilation
When it is hot the veins open allowing the blood to go to the surface of the skin
What is thermoregulation
Regulating temperature. The hypothalamus in the brain detects most of the changes and initiates the correct response
What is piloerection
Hairs stand on end trapping a layer of air keeping the body warm
What is urea
Urea is formed in the liver from the breakdown if proteins, it is toxic and is taken to the kidneys in the blood
What actions does the body take if you are too hot
Vasodilation
Behavioural changes such as shade, fan, less clothing
Sweating
Hairs lie flat
What does your body do if it is too cold
Shivering ( muscle contraction increases respiration and heat is given to the muscles)
Vasoconstriction(blood is kept at core. Less heat lost to environment)
Teeth chattering
Sweat glands reduce sweat
Behaviour-put on clothes
What happens if the blood glucose level is too low
Pancreas secretes glucagon. The glucagon converts glycogen into glucose. Glucose is reabsorbed into the blood
What is the function of the pituitary gland ?
Its releases adh
What is the function of the pancreas ?
It released glucagon and insulin
What is the function of the ovaries ?
It releases oestrogen and progesterone
What is the function of the testes ?
They release testosterone
How does adrenaline affect the body ?
Increase breathing rate
Increase heart rate
Blood is diverted from digestive system to muscles
Whats the difference between nervous system and endocrine system
Nervous system : -electrical messages -chemical across synapses -messages travel fast -very localised effect Endocrine system : -chemical messages transferred by blood -only chemical messages -longer effect -slower -wide spread effect on the body
