Breathing And Gas Exchange Flashcards
How are alveoli adapted for gas exchange ?
- large surface area
- a rich blood supplies
- short diffusion distance
What gas exchanges happen in the alveoli
O2 diffuses into blood stream
CO2 diffuses out of blood stream
What are the negative effects of smoking
- cilia are destroyed so dirt is not removed
- the walls of the alveoli are damaged
- lung cancer
- carbon monoxide also binds to haemoglobin
What is the job of the ribs
To protect the lungs
What is the job of the intercostal muscles
Raise up the lungs to increase volume of thorax
What is the job of the diaphragm
A muscular sheet at the bottom of the thorax , controls pressure in the thorax
What are the bronchi and bronchioles
Bronchi- first split of the trachea
Bronchioles -smaller branches off bronchi
What are alveoli
Tiny air sacs adapted for gaseous exchange
How do the lungs use pressure to get air into them
When we need to breathe and the diaphragm moves down creating a low pressure outside the lungs meaning that air moves into the lungs to try and get to the area of low pressure
