Name the meninges
Dura Mater - outer layer
Pia Mater - middle layer
Arachnoid Mater - inner layer
What does the nervous system comprise of
Central - brain and spinal cord
Peripheral - 12 pairs of cranial nerves & 31 pairs of spinal nerves & the autonomic nervous system
Cause of a stroke
Ruptured vessel in brain causes pressure or bleeds into surrounding brain tissue
Blockage of a vessel (thrombosis or embolus) causes hypoxic damage
Types of epileptic seizure
Generalised - both sides of brain involved
Partial - Discharge starts in localised area of the brain
Generalised epileptic seizure stages
Tonic Clonic - Pt becomes rigid, falls to ground and jerks all over
Tonic - stiffening of muscles, Pt falls to ground (no jerking) quick recovery
Atonic - loss of muscle tone, Pt collapses to ground quick recovery
Absences - brief interruption of consciousness
