Respiratory System Flashcards
What further steps can be utilise by a Paramedic & EMT’s to maintain an airway
LMA/iGels
Intubation (Para)
Needle Cricothyroidotomy (Para)
What airway techniques can an ECA utilise
Coughs Back slaps Abdo thrusts Chest thrusts Chest compressions Jaw thrust Head tilt chin lift Triple Airway manoeuvre (above with BVM) Suction OPA/NPA
What is the composition of air
Inspired: 79% nitrogen 20% oxygen 0.04% carbon dioxide 1% inert gases Water vapour (variable)
Expired: 79% nitrogen 16% oxygen 4% carbon dioxide 1% inert gases Water vapour (increased amount)
What are the components of the respiratory system
Nose Pharynx Mouth Epiglottis Larynx Trachea L&R Bronchus Bronchioles Alveoli
Lungs:
Parietal Pleura - outer layer
Serous fluid - middle layer
Visceral Pleura - inner layer
What is hypoxic drive?
Particularly in patients with COPD the levels of carbon dioxide in the blood are high this means they become desensitised to this (which is the stimulus to breathe)
Brain uses hypoxia as a stimulus to breathe
High % of O2 can remove this stimulus
What is Chronic a Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
General term covering a spectrum of diseases ranging from chronic bronchitis through to asthma and emphysema
