nervous system Flashcards
a neuron is a
specialized cell w/in nervous system
neuron is divided into 3 types
sensory - signal from specialized receptor to CNS
interneurons - complex pathways present in brain & spinal cord
motor - signal from CNS to muscle/gland being stmlted
when one region of cell has a diff charge than another is called
polarization
what is myelinated nerves
nerves w/myelin sheath (protective layer of fat & protein coats neuron)
resting potential
-70mV -> -50mV
advantage of myelinated nerves
transport signal much FASTER than unmyelinated nerves
nervous system is divided into 2
central nervous system (CNS) - brain + spinal cord
peripheral nervous system (PNS) - nerves
how many regions is the brain divided into, name them
4 regions
- cerebrum
- cerebellum
- diencephalon
- brainstem
what does the midbrain do
reticular activating system
- involved in awareness & stmltes cerebrum
what happens if the midbrain is dmged?
coma - prolonged state of unconsciousness
what is the spinal cord composed of
white matter and gray matter
what is white matter composed of
myelinated nerves
what is gray matter composed of
cell bodies
what surrounds the brain and spinal cord
meninges & cerebrospinal
name the 2 nerve branches that exits the spinal cord at each vertebral segment
dorsal root - carries sensory nerves
ventral root - carries motor nerves
ganglion
collection of nerve cell bodies outside CNS
how to test for dmg to spinal cord
evaluate reflexes in leg
- depressed = dmg at lvl where spinal nerve for reflex & spinal cord meets
- exaggerated = if above lvl
how to identify the site of problem in spinal cord
myelogram
- injecting dye into epidural space
PNS is divided into 2 systems
sensory somatic system
autonomic nervous system
autonomic nervous system separates into
sympathetic - (increases HR, dilates pupil & bronchi)
parasympathetic - opposite of sympathetic
plexus is
extensive network of nerves
body has ___ for pain, temp, light touch, vibration, pressure, and proprioception
receptors
ataxia
uncoordinated mvt
atrophy
shrinking of muscle
