nervous system Flashcards
Central nervous system (CNS)
Brain and spinal cord; the central command for all communication and actions of the body
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
all of the nerves that branch out to the rest of the body and ganglia; allows the signals sent by the brain to reach their target destination in the body.
axons
a nerve fiber that carries a nerve impulse away from the neuron cell body
dendrites
Where neurotransmitters and received. nerve fibers that carry a nerve impulse towards the neuron cell body
synapse
space between the neurons where neurotransmitters are passed to other neurons, muscles, or glands.
sensory (afferent) neurons
send messages to the CNS
motor (efferent) neurons
send messages to muscles and can be subdivided into the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system and the somatic (voluntary) nervous system.
autonomic nervous system (ANS)
controls involuntary actions involving cardiac and smooth muscle, such as heart rhythm, digestion, and breathing.
somatic nervous system (SNS)
controls voluntary actions involving skeletal muscle, such as deliberate actions like walking, throwing, or typing.
