muscular system Flashcards
tissue
group of cells that function together as a unit, but lower level than organs
three types of muscle tissues
skeletal, cardiac, and smooth
skeletal muscle tissue
attaches to bone (mostly by tendons) and is involved in the movement of bones and is the only voluntary muscle tissue in the body.
very strong and straited (ridged)
cardiac muscle tissue
involuntary muscle that is found in the heart.
also straited
smooth muscle tissue
involuntary muscle tissue found in the walls of hollow organs, and passageways, such as the stomach, intestines, and blood vessels
weakest muscle tissue
tendons
tough bands of connective tissue that have strong collagen fibers.
attach muscle to bone.
muscles
contain long myofibrils made of sarcomere units, each consisting of long strand of protein called actin and myosin.
actin
thin filaments
myosin
thick filaments
sarcomere
contracting unit of a muscle
contraction and relaxation
contracting filaments bind and are pulled together, therefore being shortened.
relaxed muscle filaments, myosin and actin, are not attached.
