integumentary system (the skin) Flashcards
components of the integumentary system
skin, hair, and nails, as well as the sebaceous, sudoriferous, and ceruminous glands; also, hair follicles, apocrine and eccrine sweat glands, and blood vessels.
Three layers of the skin
epidermis (outer), dermis (middle), and subcutaneous or hypodermis (inner layer)
epidermis
made of dead skin cells on the outside and has an inner layer of living cells.
includes cells known as melanocytes that produce and distribute melanin.
dermis
contains collagen, blood vessels, glands, hair follicles, and nerve endings.
excretion
elimination of metabolic waste from the body
ceruminous glands
structures that provide ear wax; only found in the dermis of the ear canal
sebaceous glands
in the dermis that secrete sebum onto hair emerging from the hair follicle
apocrine sweat gland
in the dermis that are in physical association with hair follicles, producing a secretion with an odor.
eccrine sweat gland
throughout the dermis that secretes sweat; used to regulate body temperature.
functions of the integumentary system
protection, excretion, homeostasis
produces vitamin D when UV light hits the skin.
homeostasis and the integumentary system
blood vessels dilate when the body is warm and carry more blood closer to the skin’s surface.
blood vessels constrict when the body is cold in a process called cutaneous vasoconstriction (reduces blood flow to the skin). also causes chills.
