4
Q

what is the function of the SNS

A

respond to the external environment and sends info to the brain then muscles resulting in involuntary muscle contraction (skeletal)

Q

what is the function of the ANS

A

receives info about internal environment and sends info to the involuntary cardiac and smooth muscle

16
Q

what does the neuron structure consist of (4)

A

dendrites - projections of nerve fibres sending nerve impulses to the cell body
cell body - contains nucleus, etc…
axon - carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
myelin sheath - insulator increasing impulse speed.

17
Q

what are the 3 types of neurons

A

inter/relay
sensory
motor

18
Q

how is action potential produced

A

sodium and potassium flow across the cell membrane running across neurons from dendrite to axon terminal.

19
Q

what is the synapse

A

the gap between two neurones dendrite and axon terminal

20
Q

what are synaptic vesicles

A

pouches found in the axon terminal containing neurotransmitters which are released into the gap when stimulated by a nerve impulse.

21
Q

what happens as a neurotransmitter is released (3)

A

neurotransmitter is released from the synaptic vesicle.
neurotransmitter binds with receptors on the dendrite triggering nerve impulses in the next neurone.
neurotransmitter is then broken down and reabsorbed in the axon terminal for reuse.
