Nervous System Flashcards
What are the autonomic origins in the CNS?
parasympathetic (craniosacral = S2-S4)
sympathetic (thorocolumbar = T1-L2)
How do the nerves travel?
preganglion neuron (white rami)
ganglion – sympathetic trunk
postganglion neuron (grey rami)
How does the sympathetic nervous system travel?
1) synapse at entry (paravertebral ganglion)
2) synapse above/below entry (C1-L3)
3) synapse at prevertebral ganglion (abdominopelvic)
4) synapse onto adrenal medulla cells
How is there sympathetic innervation in the head?
- preganglion fibers synapse in superior cervical ganglion
- postganglion fibers travel along carotid artery
How is there sympathetic innervation of thoracic and cervical viscera?
T1-T5 innervate heart/lungs
How does the parasympathetic nervous system travel?
CN III - oculomotor nerve (parasympathetic ganglia)
CN VII - facial nerve
CN IX - glossopharyngeal nerve
CN X - vagus nerve –> thoracic visceral, digestive
parasympathetic fibers in pelvis (bladder/genitals)
