Nervous Sys Flashcards
What is the network of billions of nerves cells called?
Neurons
What does the nervous system do?
Controls functions of the body and recieves and process stimili from the environment
What is the central nervous system consist of?
Brain and the spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system contain?
All the other neurons found throught the body
What is the cerebrum
The major part of the brain
What is the cerebrum responsible for?
Hearing, seeing, thinking
What is the cerebellum?
A big cluster of nerve tissue that forms the basis of the brain.
What is the cerebellum responsible for?
balance, movement and muscle coordination
What is the medulla?
part of the brainstem, connection between the brain and the spinal cord.
What is the medulla responsible for?
Controls involuntary actions such as breathing, swallowing, and the beating of the heart.
What is the spinal cord?
The major connecting center between the brain and the network of nerves.
What does the spinal cord do?
Carries impulses between all the organs and the brain and is also the control center for many simple reflexes.
What is the somatic nervous system?
Consists of nerve fivers that send sensory information t the central nervous system and controls volunatry actions.
What is the autonomic nervous system?
regulates involuntary activity in the heart, stomach and intestines
