Nervous and Muscle Tissue Flashcards
Nervous Tissue
Fuctions: Conscious control of skeletal muscles Unconscious control of cardiac muscles Self and environmental awareness Emotions Reasoning skills Memory
Neurons
Conducts action potentials
Cell Body
Contains nucleus and site of general cell fuctions
Dendrite
Conducts A.P.’s toward cell body
Axon
Conducts A.P.’s away from cell body
Neurogila
Supports cells (nourish, protect, insulate neurons
Membranes
Thin, protective layers around organs or lining a cavity
Mucous Membranes
Epithelial tissue on a thick layer of connective tissue, provides protection (oral cavity), absorption (intestine), or secretion (mucus and digestive enzymes)
Serous Membranes
Simple squamous epithelium on a delicate layer of loose connective tissue, prevents damage from abrasion between organs and cavities (lines trunk cavities and organs with mucous glands)
Skin/cutaneous Membranes
Stratified squamous epithelium & dense connective tissue (skin)
Synovial Membranes
Connective tissue that lines joint cavities
Periosteum
Connective tissue that surrounds bones
Muscle Tissue
Enables movement of the structures that are attached to them
Skeletal Muscle
Striated Muscle (cylindrical fibers, many nuclei near periphery, control voluntary body movement (attached to bone)
Cardiac Muscle
cylindrical, striated cells (single nucleus branched w/ intercalated disks), pumps blood, involuntary movement (heart)
