Inflammation Process Flashcards
Inflammation
The body’s response to tissue damage or infection
Functions of Inflammation
Mobilize body’s defenses
Destroy microorganisms, foreign materials, damaged cells
Pave way for tissue repair
Symptoms of Inflammation
Redness Heat Swelling Pain Disturbance of function
Edema
Swelling (water, proteins) of tissues
Fibrin
protein that walls off the site; keeps infection from spreading
Neutrophils
ingest bacteria (phagocytic WBC)
Macrophage
ingest tissue debris
Pus
Mixture of dead cells, neutrophils, and fluid
Regeneration
The same type of cells take the place of the old cells (skin)
Replacement
Different type of tissue takes its place, develops scars
Labile Cells
Divide continuously throughout life (skin, mucous membranes)
Stable Cells
Don’t actively divide but can after injury (connective tissue)
Permanent Cells
Little to no ability to divide (Neurons and skeletal muscle)
