Cavities and Linings Flashcards
Cranial Cavity
The brain cavity (surrounded by the same dura mater as the vertebral cavity)
Dura Mater
Surrounds the cranial and vertebral cavities and provides a protective lining
Vertebral Cavity
The spinal cavity (surrounded by the same dura mater as the cranial cavity)
Thoracic Cavity
The chest cavity which houses the left and right Pleuras, the pericardial cavity, the esophagus, and the trachea
Pleura Cavities
Surrounds each lung and is housed inside the thoracic cavity
Abdominopelvic Cavity
The Abdominal cavity which houses digestive organs (stomach and intestines etc.) and reproductive organs
Peritoneum
Surrounds the abdominopelvic cavity and provides a protective lining
Diaphragm
A muscle that sits between the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities that controls breathing by providing negative pressure to the lungs
Pericardial Cavity
The heart cavity (housed inside the thoracic cavity)
Pericardium
The protective lining around the pericardial cavity
Retroperitoneum
The organs located behind the abdominopelvic cavity
