Connective Tissue Flashcards
Connective Tissue
Most abundant tissue with multiple uses, relatively few cells in extracellular matrix (fruit in jello)
Collagen Fibers
Rope-like; resist stretching
Reticular Fibers
Fine, short collagen fibers; branched for support
Elastic Fibers
Coiled; stretch and recoil to original shape
Ground Substance
A combination of proteins and other molecules
Proteoglycans
Protein/ polysaccharide complex that traps water
Blast
Produce matrix
Cyte
Cells maintain it
Clast
Breaks down matrix
Macrophage
Large cells that ingest foreign matter
Mast cells
Cells that release chemicals to promote inlammation
Functions of connective tissue
Enclose organs
Connect tissue (Tendons and ligaments)
Support and movement
Storage of fat
Cushion and insulation
Transportation
Protection
Areolar (Loose) Tissue
Fluid-filled spaces, forms thin membranes between organs (muscles, nerves, attaches skin)
Adipose (Fat) Tissue
Lipid filled, stores fat and provides a thermal insulation layer along with protection (beneath the skin, around organs)
Dense Fibrous/ Collagenous Tissue
Mostly collagen, withstands pulling forces and stretching (tendons and ligaments)
