Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Epithelial tissue
Tissue that cover internal and external surfaces with cells with very little cellular matrix
Fuctions
Protect underlying structures
Barrier to keep things in and out
Exchanges of substances such as O2 and CO2 in lung epithelia
Secretion through glands
Absorption of nutrients
Simple Epithelium
One layer of cells
Stratified Epithelium
Multiple layers of cells
Squamous Epithelium
Flat and scale like
Cuboidal Epithelium
Cube shaped
Columnar
Tall and thin
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Lines blood cells, (diffusion and filtration)
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Kidneys and glands, (secretion or absorption)
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Lines stomach and intestines, sometimes w/ cilia, (secretion and absorption)
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
SINGLE cell layer (some surface not all) and always with cilia, lining nasal cavity, (Synthesis or secretion)
Transitional Epithelium
Stratified and cuboidal when not stretched and squamous when stretched
Cilia
Little “hairs” that move particles across cell surfaces
