Nerves of the Upper Limb Flashcards
The first branch off of the brachial plexus, exits at C5 anterior rami before the plexus starts (C4 anterior rami may also be involved) and innervates the rhomboids and levator scapulae
Dorsal scapular nerve
Branches off of the superior trunk of brachial plexus, C4-C6, and innervates supraspinatus and infraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve
Branch off of the superior trunk of brachial plexus, C5-C6, innervates subclavius
Subclavian nerve
Derived from individual branches of C5-C7, innervates serratus anterior
Long thoracic nerve
Derived from the lateral root of the median nerve, C5-C7, this innervates both heads of the pectoralis major
Lateral pectoral nerve
The terminal branch off of the lateral cord, C5-C7, that innervates coracobrachialis, brachialis, biceps
Musculocutaneous
Continues off of the musculocutaneous to receive cutaneous sensory of lateral forearm
Lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm
Derived from the medial root of the median nerve, C8-T1, this innervates the pectoralis minor and the sternocostal head of the pectoralis major
Medial pectoral nerve
This branches off of the medial cord, C8-T2, is medial to the axillary nerve and receives cutaneous sensory from the skin of the medial arm
Medial cutaneous nerve of the arm
This is also a branch off of the medial cord, C8-T1, is superficial to the muscles of the anterior arm and receives cutaneous sensory from the skin of the medial forearm-it also travels with the basilic vein
Medial cutaneous nerve of the forearm
This is the terminal branch off of the medial cord, C7-T1, it travels with its same named a. and v., and it travels superficial to the flexor retinaculum to to enter medial hand
Ulnar nerve
This is the terminal branch created by the joining of the medial and lateral roots of the brachial plexus
Median nerve
This receives cutaneous sensory from skin of the medial palm of hand, medial dorsum of hand, digit 5 and medial surface of digit 4, as well as flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor digitorum profundus-medial 1/2, flexor pollicis brevis, palmar and dorsal interossei, adductor pollicis, all hypothenars, and lumbricals 3&4
Ulnar nerve
This receives cutaneous sensory from skin of lateral palm of hand, digits 1-3, and lateral surface of digit 4, and innervates all flexors of the anterior forearm (EXCEPT FCU, medial FDP, lumbricals 3&4, and all thenar muscles)
Median nerve
This nerve is present on the thenar eminence, and innervates the 3 pollicis muscles
Recurrent branch of Median nerve
