Innervation of the Neck Flashcards
This nerve runs right next to the internal jugular vein, provides somatic motor to muscles of the pharynx, larynx, and superior esophagus, provides parasympathetic autonomic innervation to the trachea, and sensory from the pharynx, larynx, superior esophagus, carotid sinus, and carotid body
Vagus nerve
Located at the bifurcation of the CCA, this has chemoreceptors to monitor O2, CO2, glucose, etc., in the blood
Carotid body
This enlarged area in the internal carotid artery contains baroreceptors to monintor blood pressure
Carotid sinus
This nerve is derived from the spinal cord and the medulla oblongata and travels deep to the SCM and superficial to the levator scapulae to innervate the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles
Spinal accessory nerve
This is a cranial nerve that goes into the floor of the mouth to innervate the tongue muscles
Hypoglossal
The mylohyoid and the anterior belly of the digastric m. are innervated by branches of the
Trigeminal nerve
The platysma, stylohyoid, and posterior belly of the digastric m. are innervated by branches of the
Facial nerve
The lesser occipital nerve anterior rami provides cutaneous sensory from
skin of lateral neck and scalp posterior to the auricle
The Greater auricular nerve anterior rami provide cutaneous sensory from
skin of the lateral neck inferior to the auricle and skin of the auricle
The Transverse cervical nerve anterior rami provide cutaneous sensory from
the skin of the anterior neck
The Supraclavicular nerves anterior rami provide cutaneous sensory from
skin of inferolateral neck
The Greater occipital nerve posterior rami provides cutaneous sensory from the
skin of posterior scalp
The cutaneous branches of posterior rami of C4-C8 spinal nerves provide cutaneous sensory from
the skin of the posterior neck
This nerve loops near the bifurcation of the CCA to innervate the omohyoid, sternohyoid, and sternothyroid muscles
Ansa cervicalis
This nerve is found anterior to the anterior scalene and receives somatic sensory from the diaphragmatic pleura, mediastinal pleura, and pericardium, as well as innervates the diaphragm
Phrenic nerve
