Neck Flashcards
Cutaneous muscle, attaches to the skin below the chin, innervated by the facial nerve and acts in facial expression
Platysma
Runs on lateral sides of neck with 3 bony attachments and is innervated (with the trapezius) by the spinal accessory nerve
Sternocleidomastoid
Composed of an anterior, middle, and posterior parts; brachial plexus roots come out between the anterior and middle parts
Scalenes
This artery is within the carotid sheath in the neck and supplies the head and neck; it bifurcates
Common carotid
This artery is a branch of the brachiocephalic trunk on the right side of the body
Right common carotid
This artery is a branch of the aortic arch on the left side of the body
Left common carotid
This artery is off of the common carotid, it travels superiorly and enters the cranium to supply the brain, the structures in the orbit, the forehead and the anterior scalp
Internal carotid
This artery is off of the common carotid, it travels superiorly deep to the posterior belly of the digastric m. and supplies the face, larynx, pharynx, posterior/lateral scalp, and the meninges
External carotid
This artery is the first branch off of the external carotid a., it travels inferiorly and deep to the sternothyroid m. to supply the thyroid gland and larynx. It also has a branch called the superior laryngeal branch to supply the larynx
Superior thyroid a.
This artery is found between the external and internal carotid and is a branch off of the external carotid, it travels superiorly to supply the pharynx
Ascending pharyngeal a.
This vein is just deep to the platysma m. and the SCM m. and it drains blood from the face, posterior and lateral scalp, and superficial neck into the subclavian v.
External jugular vein
This vein runs deep to the platysma to drain blood from superficial and anterior neck into the external jugular vein
Anterior jugular vein
This vein connects the common facial vein and the anterior jugular vein, and travels just on the anterior edge of the SCM m.
Communicating vein
This vein is deep to the SCM. and is found within the carotid sheath; it is a continuation of the sigmoid sinus of the cranium (drains venous blood from cranium), and it drains blood from the brain, face, pharynx, larynx, and thyroid gland into the brachiocephalic vein
Internal jugular vein
The ____ vein and ____ vein join to make the brachiocephalic vein
Internal jugular and subclavian
