Nerves and Blood supply of upper limb Flashcards
What is the passage of blood in the upper limb?
Arch of the aorta Brachiocephalic artery Right subclavian artery Axillary artery Brachial artery Radial/ ulna artery
What are the collateral arteries and what are their function?
Radial collateral artery
Superior and inferior ulnar collateral artery
Found around joints to allow continuous blood supply during movement at the joints
What gets compressed when you pronate the arm?
Radial artery
Motor of musculocutaneous nerve
Anterior upper arm flexors
BBC
Biceps brachialis
Brachialis
Coracobrachialis
Sensory musculocutaneous
Skin of the lateral forearm
Motor of the axillary nerve
Deltoid and teres minor (adduction of the arm)
Sensory of the axillary nerve
Skin on the deltoid muscles (regimental badge)
Where does the median nerve run?
Medial to the biceps brachii with brachial artery
Anteriorly at the cubital fossa to enter forearm
Supplies majority of the flexor compartment
Passes through carpal tunnel and supplies muscle of the thumb
Motor of median nerve
Flexors forearm
Thumb
Sensory of median nerve
Skin of digits 1,2,3,3.5
Back of the hand - Top of the fingers 1,2,3 and top of the thumb
Where does the radial nerve run?
Passes into the posterior compartment of the arm
Runs into the radial groove deep to triceps brachii
Motor of radial nerve
All muscles posterior aspect of arm and forearm
Extensors of upper arm and forearm
Sensory of the radial nerve
Skin over the posterior arm to wrist
Posterior Dorsal hand base of digits 1-3 and thumb
Where does the ulnar nerve run?
Runs medially in the arm and passes posterior to the medial epicondyl of the humerus
Motor of the ulna nerve
Some forearm flexors: Flexor carpi ulnaris and ulnar half of flexor digitorum profoundus in the forearm
Most of the intrinsic muscles in the hand
Sensory of the ulna nerve
Skin over medial dorsal and plantar hand
Anterior and posterior Digits 3.5,4,5

Name 3 important nerves from the brachial plexus that do not enter the upper limb
Long Thoracic - serratus anterior
(Under armpit like a T shirt)
Roots: C5 C6 C7
Thoracodorsal nerve - latissimus dorsi
(Mid to lower back)
Roots: C6 C7 C8
Suprascapular nerve - supraspinatus, infraspinatus
(Posterior - over the scapula)
Roots: C5, C6
What are the main points of the brachial plexus?
Roots Trunks Divisions Cords Branches
Read that dang cadaver book
What is Erb’s Palsy?
Problem with axillary nerve (deltoids) Medially rotated arm (waiters tip) Extended elbow (musculocutaneous nerve)
Due to an extensive angle between the shoulder and neck, pulled out of womb by the head
What is Klumpke’s Palsy?
Injury to inferior roots of the brachial plexus (less common that injury to the superior roots)
Claw
Affecting C8 and T1
Name the superficial veins in the upper limb
Cephalic (lateral), basilic (medial), median cubital
Dorsal venous network (behind the hand)
Name some deep veins in the upper limb
Subclavian vein (and artery) Axillary vein (and artery) Brachial vein (and artery) Radial vein (and artery) Ulnar vein (and artery)
