Joint Types Flashcards
What are the different types of synovial joints? And give an example of where they are found
Planar (b/w tarsals)
Hinge (b/w humerus and the ulna)
Pivot (b/w vertebrae)
Ellipsoidal / Condyloid (b/w metacarpals and phalanx)
Saddle (b/w metacarpals and carpals)
Ball and socket (b/w hip and femur)
Types of joints that are solid joints
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Example of fibrous joints
Sutures: Skull
Synostosis: ossified (bone formed) suture that is immoveable (usually abnormal fusion of two bones)
Syndesmosis: sheet of fibrous tissue between bones (e.g. interosseous membrane between the tibia and fibula)
Gomphosis: teeth
NO MOVEMENT
Example of cartilaginous joints
Symphysis - connected by fibrocartilage e.g. IV discs and pubic symphysis
Synchrondosis - hyaline cartilage connection (joints with epiphyseal growth plates I.e. long bones, costochondral joints (ribs to sternum))
LITTLE OR NO MOVEMENT
What does it mean to be a solid joint?
No synovial cavity
What are sutures?
A type of fibrous joint that is only found in the skull
What are the different cranial sutures?
Metopic (bindi)
Coronal (front 3rd, either side of the anterior fontanelle)
Saggital
Lambdoid (closer to the back of the head, either side of the posterior fontanelle)
