Nerves Flashcards
medial ankle paresthesias which radiate into the arch of his foot.
saphenous nerve - L4 root
sensory contribution to the medial thigh, superior to the knee
obturator nerve
sensory branches to the skin of the anterolateral lower leg and dorsum of the foot
superficial peroneal nerve - L4-S1
sensory innervation to the posterolateral lower leg, lateral ankle and lateral foot.
sural nerve - S1-S2
foot drop, in which the patient complains of a limp, tripping over the foot as they ambulate
common peroneal nerve
Loss of patellar reflex
femoral nerve
Loss of achilles reflex
Tibial nerve
Loss of foot eversion
superficial peroneal
Loss of dorsiflexion and toe extension
deep peroneal
Loss of plantar flexion and ankle inversion
posterior tibial nerve
hamstring and ankle weakness, an absent ankle reflex and numbness on the posterolateral leg (laterally from hip to foot)
Sciatic nerve
Cranial nerve III palsy
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
increased intracranial pressure due to compression of the fourth ventricle (lethargy, nausea, vomiting)
Cerebellar hemmorrhage
contralateral palsy
Frontal lobe hemmorrhage
Wernicke’s aphasia (receptive aphasia) where the patient speaks clearly but has trouble understanding.
Temporal lobe hemorrhage
contralateral hemisensory loss with CT enhancement in the brain parenchyma
thalamic hemorrhage
rapid progression of hemiplegia, nausea, vomiting and headache over 30 minutes, which is quickly followed by ipsilateral deviation of the eyes, stupor, coma and mydriatic pupils (“blown-pupil”, associated with brainstem compression and oculomotor nerve palsy)
putamen hemorrhage
characterized by total paralysis, rapid coma, decerebrate rigidity (abnormal posturing marked by shoulder adduction, elbow extension, wrist pronation and flexion, digit flexion, leg extension and plantarflexion) and small (miotic), not mydriatic, reactive pupils.
Pontine hemorrhages
Alcoholic whom slept on hand with wrist drop
Radial nerve palsy (superficial branch of radial nerve)
V2 and V3 nerve distribution
Trigeminal neuralgia
Spinal cord ends at…
L1-L2
Pregnant, obese, and people who bend over a lot with decreased light touch and pinprick sensation in area around front pants pocket
Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
Spasticity
Upper motor neuron

C5/C6
Triceps reflex
C7
patellar reflex
