Hyaline Membrane Disease
A
Histology: hyaline membrane = protenacious exudate
1/4 of babies born at 30 - 31/40 will be affected

Normal Surfactant Production
A
Lipoprotein mixture produced by t2 respiratory cells
Excreted by alveolar epithelium
Hyaline membrane = proteinaceous exudate

Hypocalcaemia in the Neonate
A
Seen in: prems, HIE, diabetic mum
Accompanied by high phosphate +/- high ALP, +/- low vitamin D
Mg may be normal but check it!
If also has tetany –> 10% Ca gluconate bolus with cardiac monitoring
Longer term give 1,25-dihydroxy cholecalciferol
