Nehemiah surveying Jerusalem’s gates that have been burned in fire. There is a wierd congugation for the word המפרוצים Nech. 2:13
And I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the dragon’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
nehemia inspecting damaged walls- at night because even though he had permission from cyrus, other people are not happy about the Jews return

סַנְבַלַּ֨ט הַחֹֽרֹנִ֜י וְטֹבִיָּ֣ה ׀ הָעֶ֣בֶד הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֗י וְגֶ֨שֶׁם֙ הָֽעַרְבִ֔י

People who mock Nehemiah when he is rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. Trio of troublemakers, try to stop the rebuilding of the Temple Neh. 2:19
19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said: ‘What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?’

Nehemiah’s rebuilding the wall in Jerusalem. Half of the workers hold spears (רמחים) and they all work from dawn until the stars emerge. zionists like this line. the workers have to work with spears in hand.

Nehemiah demands the aristocrats of Jerusalem forgive all credits and loans. He shakes his garment and says anyone who does not forgive debts will be shaken by God. לנער - to shake חצני - lap

After hearing torah, people cry because they have broken the laws. People told to go feast. The Torah should make them happy not sad. Celebrate Rosh Hashonnah, don’t mourn and give gifts to the poor. Your strength is in HaShem. (Is Ezra speaking??)
Neh 8:10
Then he said unto them: ‘Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord; neither be ye grieved; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.’

Ezra and the people celebrate Sukkot. They take all these branches to celebrate Sukkot. Neh 8:15-18

Nehemiah’s reforms -more ban on intermarraige Ammonites & Moabites are kicked out of Khal Israe lקִדְּמ֛וּ - to welcome בַּלֶּ֣חֶם - with bread וַיִּשְׂכֹּ֨ר - he hired (Bilam to curse us, but God turned the curse into a blessing)

Nehemiah’s reforms - Jerusalem is closed to business on Shabbat. Nehemiah trying to enforce Shabbat laws.
