עָרֹ֨ם יָצָ֨תִי [יָצָ֨אתִי] מִבֶּ֣טֶן אִמִּ֗י וְעָרֹם֙ אָשׁ֣וּב שָׁ֔מָּה ה נָתַ֔ן וַֽה לָקָ֑ח יְהִ֛י שֵׁ֥ם ה מְבֹרָֽךְ
Job accepts his suffering. “My mother’s womb” can be a metaphor for the earth from which man was originally made.
Job 1:21
21 And he said; naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither; the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
עֹֽדְךָ֖ מַֽחֲזִ֣יק בְּתֻמָּתֶ֑ךָ בָּרֵ֥ךְ אֱלֹקים וָמֻֽת
After Job gets ill, his wife says “ you cling to your integrity. curse God and die. “ You may as well blaspheme God. Even if you die for it, since even death is preferable to your agony.
Job 2:9
9 Then said his wife unto him: ‘Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? blaspheme God, and die.’
אֱלִיפַ֤ז הַתֵּֽימָנִי֙ וּבִלְדַּ֣ד הַשּׁוּחִ֔י וְצוֹפַ֖ר הַנַּֽעֲמָתִ֑י
names of Jobs three friends
יֹ֣אבַד י֖וֹם אִוָּ֣לֶד בּ֑וֹ וְהַלַּ֥יְלָה אָ֝מַ֗ר הֹ֣רָה גָֽבֶר
I should have never been born! יאבד- usually to lose one’s life, but here it means ‘curse-ed’
Job 3:3
3 Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night wherein it was said: ‘A man-child is brought forth.’
וַיַּ֤עַן ׀ אֱלִיה֖וּא בֶן־בַּֽרַכְאֵ֥ל הַבּוּזִ֗י וַיֹּ֫אמַ֥ר
Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite , 4th friend who appears and in narrative is out of place
Job 32:6
And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said:I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I held back, and durst not declare you mine opinion.
מִ֤י זֶ֨ה ׀ מַחְשִׁ֖יךְ עֵצָ֥ה בְמִלִּ֗ין בְּֽלִי־דָֽעַת
God says to everyone: stop talking this nonsense. מחשיך - to darken במלין = במלים - with words.
Job 38:2
2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
אַחַ֣ת דִּ֭בַּרְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה וּ֝שְׁתַּ֗יִם וְלֹ֣א אוֹסִֽיף
God rebukes Job and Job admits his error. He acknowledges that he has no right to dispute God and he will henceforth remain silent. He says that his first question - why do the righteous suffer? has been answered by Elihu: God’s ways are good, though we do not understand them. But his second question - Why should the wicked prosper? remains. (Ralbag)
Job 40:5
5 Once have I spoken, but I will not answer again; yea, twice, but I will proceed no further.
עַל־כֵּ֭ן אֶמְאַ֣ס וְנִחַ֑מְתִּי עַל־עָפָ֥ר וָאֵֽפֶר
Having glimpsed the majesty of God, Job relents. He has no further need to comprehend what is beyond human comprehension. אמאס - to be sick of, fed up with. נחמתי - I let rest, I relent עפר - ashes אפר - ash
Job 42:6
6 Wherefore I abhor my words, and repent, seeing I am dust and ashes.
