וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ה אֶל־הוֹשֵׁ֗עַ לֵ֣ךְ קַח־לְךָ֞ אֵ֤שֶׁת זְנוּנִים֙ וְיַלְדֵ֣י זְנוּנִ֔ים כִּֽי־זָנֹ֤ה תִזְנֶה֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ מֵאַֽחֲרֵ֖י ה
God telling Hosea to get a whore wife, symbolizes Israel’s sin of worshiping other gods +++ Hosea 1:2
the LORD said unto Hosea: ‘Go, take unto thee a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry; for the land doth commit great harlotry, departing from the LORD.’
God instructs Hosea to take a prostitute wife. This symbolizes Israels sin of worshiping other gods
גֹּ֖מֶר בַּת־דִּבְלָ֑יִם
Hosea’s wife’s name
קְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ יִזְרְעֶ֑אל כִּֽי־ע֣וֹד מְעַ֗ט וּפָ֨קַדְתִּ֜י אֶת־דְּמֵ֤י יִזְרְעֶאל֙ עַל־בֵּ֣ית יֵה֔וּא וְהִ֨שְׁבַּתִּ֔י מַמְלְכ֖וּת בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
In a very short time, I will requite the sins of ISrael
וַתַּ֤הַר עוֹד֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בַּ֔ת וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ קְרָ֥א שְׁמָ֖הּ לֹ֣א רֻחָ֑מָה
God telling Hosea to call his daughter Lo-ruhama, because God will no longer pity the House of Israel. God will pity the house of Judah, though.
קְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ לֹ֣א עַמִּ֑י כִּ֤י אַתֶּם֙ לֹ֣א עַמִּ֔י וְאָֽנֹכִ֖י לֹֽא־אֶהְיֶ֥ה לָכֶֽם:
Hosea 1:9
Call his name Lo-ammi; for ye are not My people, and I will not be yours. +++ God telling Hosea to call his son Lo-ami because the house of Israel is no longer his people.
וְֽ֠הָיָה מִסְפַּ֤ר בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כְּח֣וֹל הַיָּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יִמַּ֖ד וְלֹ֣א יִסָּפֵ֑ר וְֽ֠הָיָה בִּמְק֞וֹם אֲשֶׁר־יֵֽאָמֵ֤ר לָהֶם֙ לֹֽא־עַמִּ֣י אַתֶּ֔ם יֵֽאָמֵ֥ר לָהֶ֖ם בְּנֵ֥י אֵֽל־חָֽי: בוְ֠נִקְבְּצוּ בְּנֵֽי־יְהוּדָ֤ה וּבְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יַחְדָּ֔ו וְשָׂמ֥וּ לָהֶ֛ם רֹ֥אשׁ אֶחָ֖ד וְעָל֣וּ מִן־הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֥י גָד֖וֹל י֥וֹם יִזְרְעֶֽאל: גאִמְר֥וּ לַֽאֲחֵיכֶ֖ם עַמִּ֑י וְלַֽאֲחֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם רֻחָֽמָה
Hosea 2:1-3
Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass that, instead of that which was said unto them: ‘Ye are not My people’, it shall be said unto them: ‘Ye are the children of the living God.’
And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint themselves one head, and shall go up out of the land; for great shall be the day of Jezreel.
Say ye unto your brethren: ‘Ammi’; and to your sisters, ‘Ruhamah.’
although his children get bad names ,they will be changed. Just like God who will reconcile with Israel Reconciliation. Past Israel was bad, in the future will be good.
וְנָתַ֨תִּי לָ֤הּ אֶת־כְּרָמֶ֨יהָ֙ מִשָּׁ֔ם וְאֶת־עֵ֥מֶק עָכ֖וֹר לְפֶ֣תַח תִּקְוָ֑ה וְעָ֤נְתָה שָּׁ֨מָּה֙ כִּימֵ֣י נְעוּרֶ֔יהָ וּכְי֖וֹם עֲלוֹתָ֥הּ מֵאֶֽרֶץ־מִצְרָֽיִם: יחוְהָיָ֤ה בַיּֽוֹם־הַהוּא֙ נְאֻם־ה תִּקְרְאִ֖י אִישִׁ֑י וְלֹֽא־תִקְרְאִי־לִ֥י ע֖וֹד בַּעְלִֽי
Hosea 2:17-18
This is a renewal of vows, return to the old*
And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she shall respond there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call Me Ishi, and shalt call Me no more Baali.
Petach TIkvah –> name of city in Israel (begining of hope)
++++ Part of reconcilliation will be transformation of nature. Vinyards grow in the desert. Emek Achor will be redeemed to city of Peth Hatikvah. Declartion of marriage, she will call me not “master” but “my man”
מִשָּׁ֔ם - from then

כאוְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִ֖י לְעוֹלָ֑ם וְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִי֙ בְּצֶ֣דֶק וּבְמִשְׁפָּ֔ט וּבְחֶ֖סֶד וּבְרַֽחֲמִֽים: כבוְאֵֽרַשְׂתִּ֥יךְ לִ֖י בֶּאֱמוּנָ֑ה וְיָדַ֖עַתְּ אֶת־ה:
Prayer before putting on the tefillin, we are married again to God.
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ה אֵלַ֗י ע֚וֹד לֵ֣ךְ אֱהַב־אִשָּׁ֔ה אֲהֻ֥בַת רֵ֖עַ וּמְנָאָ֑פֶת כְּאַֽהֲבַ֤ת ה֙ אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְהֵ֗ם פֹּנִים֙ אֶל־אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וְאֹֽהֲבֵ֖י אֲשִׁישֵׁ֥י עֲנָבִֽים: בוָֽאֶכְּרֶ֣הָ לִּ֔י בַּֽחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה עָשָׂ֖ר כָּ֑סֶף וְחֹ֥מֶר שְׂעֹרִ֖ים וְלֶ֥תֶךְ שְׂעֹרִֽים: גוָֽאֹמַ֣ר אֵלֶ֗יהָ יָמִ֤ים רַבִּים֙ תֵּ֣שְׁבִי לִ֔י לֹ֣א תִזְנִ֔י וְלֹ֥א תִֽהְיִ֖י לְאִ֑ישׁ וְגַם־אֲנִ֖י אֵלָֽיִךְ: דכִּ֣י ׀ יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֗ים יֵֽשְׁבוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵ֥ין מֶ֨לֶךְ֙ וְאֵ֣ין שָׂ֔ר וְאֵ֥ין זֶ֖בַח וְאֵ֣ין מַצֵּבָ֑ה וְאֵ֥ין אֵפ֖וֹד וּתְרָפִֽים:
God to Hosea - Go, get another faithless wife. Continuing the marriage metaphor - God is our husband, and Israel has cheated on him by having other Gods.
וּמְנָאָ֑פֶת - adultery
אָלֹ֣ה וְכַחֵ֔שׁ וְרָצֹ֥חַ וְגָנֹ֖ב וְנָאֹ֑ף פָּרָ֕צוּ וְדָמִ֥ים בְּדָמִ֖ים נָגָֽעוּ
Swearing, and lying, and adultery have burst forth. Pools of blood touch. Hosea is concerned about ethical morals. Also means Hosea is familiar with the 10 commandments. Hosea 4:2
וְנָאֹ֑ף - to commit adultery
כִּ֛י חֶ֥סֶד חָפַ֖צְתִּי וְלֹא־זָ֑בַח וְדַ֥עַת אֱלֹהִ֖ים מֵֽעֹלֽוֹת
Hosea 6:6
For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt-offerings. Similar to what that Amos says. God prefers loyalty over sacrifice. Morailty more important than sacrifice.
שׁ֚וּבָה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַ֖ד ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ כִּ֥י כָשַׁ֖לְתָּ בַּֽעֲוֹנֶֽךָ: גקְח֤וּ עִמָּכֶם֙ דְּבָרִ֔ים וְשׁ֖וּבוּ אֶל־ה אִמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו כָּל־תִּשָּׂ֤א עָוֹן֙ וְקַח־ט֔וֹב וּנְשַׁלְּמָ֥ה פָרִ֖ים שְׂפָתֵֽינו
Words in place of sacrifice. Read on Shabbat Shuvah. Reconciliation, Tsuvah
Hosea 14:2-3
Return, O Israel, unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast stumbled in thine iniquity.
Take with you words, and return unto the LORD; say unto Him: ‘Forgive all iniquity, and accept that which is good; let us pay in place of our cows with our words.”
Reconcilication- Teshuva. Words in place of sacrifice.
There is a message of hope at the end ++++ Hosea. Your sin has caused to stumble, talk amoungst yourselfs, say to God forgive everything, acccept our good deeds, and let us pay in place of our cows with our words. Valuing prayer over sacrifice. Read on Shabbat Shuvah. פָרִ֖ים -cows
