Isaiah 1 - Core Message
Israel has sinned by being corrupt/unjust (significant b/c the sin is NOT avodah zarah). Assyria is God’s instrument of punishment, *God will keep a remnant, Jerusalem for future salvation, messianic age, world peace, all the stuff Ms. America wants.
Isaiah 1 - Recurrent Metaphor
God brings low the mighty, raises up the lowly. Ie cut down tall trees, knock down mountains, raise up the humble, poor
Prophetic Call
Basic Version - God calls on person, the person says some version of “I’m not worthy”, God reassures them. Moses&Samuel do this. *Isaiah - I am tamei, I can not answer the call. Angel puts a coal in his mouth and purifies him.
Who is Zerubbabel?
Govenor of Judah while Judah was a Persian Province. Grandson of Jehoiachin, 2nd to last king of Judah. He leads around 538-520. He brings back the first wave of exiles from Babylonian captivity. He also lays the foundation for the second Temple. Often mentioned with his high priest, Joshuah son of Jozadak (Jehozadak)
Who is Joshuah ben Jehozadak?
High priest under Zerubbabel
What are Brettler’s five core beliefs of all the literary prophets?
1) Our God HaShem is God of the whole world. 2) Hashem has a special relationship with Israel 3) The covenant has ritual and ethical obligations 4) Israel has broken the covenant, so there will be punishment 5) There will eventually be forgiveness, reconciliation, rebirth.
Who are the four major 8th century prophets?
Israel (before 722) : Hosea (Northern part of Northern Kingdom) and Amos (Southern part of Northern Kingdom). Judah : Micah & Isaiah
According to Hosea, what is Israel’s primary sin?
Idolatry/Polythism. BUT minor note of ethical sins are also mentioned.
According to Hosea, who is worse, ISrael or Judah?
Ephraim=Israel (the northern kingdom) is much worse than Judah (the southern kingdom)
Does Amos focus on ritual or ethical sins?
Mostly ethical, secondary ritual ones.
How is Amos a double outsider?
Even though he is prophecising in the Northern Kingdom, he is actually from Judah. Also he is not a professional prophet.
Isaiah 1 and Amos - how are they similar?
Both include judgements of nations other than Israel and Judah, and those nations are always found wanting, they will always be destroyed/punished.
Prophetic Call Isaiah
Isaiah - Angel puts coal in his mouth & purifies him.
Prophetic Call Jeremiah
Jeremiah - God says “I knew you before you were formed.” Jeremiah “But I don’t know how to speak”, God “I’ll put the words in your mouth”, God touches Jeremiah’s mouth. Jeremiah is a much more reluctant prophet than Isaiah.
