Neck: Level 1, 2, and 3 Flashcards
Which vertebrae comprise the cervical spine?
C1-C7
This is bulging of the external jugular vein which indicates increased blood volume and usually congestive heart failure (CHF).
JVD (Jugular Vein Distension)
What does JVD indicate?
Increased blood volume and usually congestive heart failure (CHF).
Impaired neck flexion due to stiffness of neck.
Nuchal rigidity
Capable of moving and bending without difficulty, not stiff.
Supple
Enlargement or swelling of lymph nodes.
Lymphadenopathy
An accumulation of signs and symptoms (e.g. headache and neck stiffness) suggestive of meningitis.
Meningismus
Enlarged thyroid.
Thyromegaly
The trachea is in the center of the neck and not deviated to one side.
Trachea midline
What does deviation of the trachea to one side of the midline suggest?
A pneumothorax
Positive when flexing a patient’s neck forward causes them to flex their hip and knees or it causes them pain.
Brudzinski’s Sign
What does a positive Brduzinski’s sign test indicate?
Meningitis
Audible sound of turbulent blood flow heard over the carotid artery during auscultation.
Carotid Bruit
What does carotid bruit (turbulent blood flow heard over the carotid artery during auscultation indicate)?
Narrowing of the artery.
Performed by flexing the patient’s hip to 90 degrees then extending their knee. If pain is elicited during the test, the test is positive.
Kernig’s Sign
