Musculoskeletal: Level 1 and 2 Flashcards
Joint pain.
Arthralgia
Fracture of a metacarpal bone.
Boxer’s Fracture
Visual abnormality of a bone.
Deformity
Displacement of a bone from a joint, misalignment of the joint.
Dislocation
Blood clot within a deep vein, usually within the lower leg.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Swelling caused by excess fluid collection.
Edema
Form of arthritis (joint inflammation) caused by formation of uric acid crystals.
Gout
Junction or union of two or more bones.
Joint
A tough band of tissue connecting bones together.
Ligament
Muscle pain
Myalgia
The full movement potential of a joint.
Range of motion (ROM)
Pain radiating from the lower back down one or both legs, caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. A form of radiculopathy.
Sciatica
Painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints.
Arthritis
Tenderness when palpating the calf, may indicate a DVT (deep vein thrombosis).
Calf Tenderness
Inflammation of the cartilage which connects a rib to the sternum.
Costochondritis
Broken bone.
Fracture
Bony projection on each side of the ankle. (Lateral or Medial)
Malleolus
Inflammation or infection of bone.
Osteomyelitis
Tenderness of the muscles on either side of the spine.
Paraspinal tenderness
Pinched or compressed nerve in the spine.
Radiculopathy
A triangular indentation seen on the radial, dorsal aspect of the hand (back of the hand on the thumb side) when the thumb is extended.
Snuff box
What does tenderness over the Snuff Box incidate?
Likely scaphoid fracture
Deformity/misalignment of the spine felt on palpation, indicates spinal fracture.
Step-Offs
What do Step-Offs indicate?
Spinal fracture
Positive when pain is elicited when the provider lifts the patient’s leg above the horizontal level while the patient is laying on their back.
Straight Leg Raise (SLR)
What does a positive SLR usually indicate?
Sciatica or herniated disk
