Neck Flashcards
Describe the Hyoid Bone
no articulation with other bones
it is an attachment for neck muscles
acts as a prop to open airway
Describe the superficial fascia of the neck
subcutaneous tissue of the neck
located between the dermis and deep cervical fascia
contains blood, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, fat, and platysma
Connections of the sternocleidomastoid
connected to the sternum, clavicle, and mastoid process
Sternocleidomastoid innervation
innervated by the spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
C2 and C3 nerves (pain and proprioception)
Platysma innervation
innervated by the facial nerve (CN VII)
Where is the Larynx located?
located between C3-C6 vertebrae
What are the roles of the Larynx?
voice production
protecting airway during swallowing
acts as sphincter or valve
What two things does the larynx connect to each other?
the pharynx and the trachea
Larynx attachments
hyoid bone (superior attachment)
trachea (inferior attachment)
Longus colli innervation
anterior rami of C2-C6 spinal nerves
Longus colli function
flexes neck; bending of cervical vertebrae
Longus capitis function
flexion of head on neck
Rector capitis anterior function
flexion of head on neck
Middle scalene function
flexes neck laterally; forced inspiration; elevates 1st rib
Posterior scalene function
flexes neck laterally; elevates 2nd rib during forced inspiratoin
Parts of the Pharynx
nasopharynx
oropharynx
laryngopharynx
Pharyngeal constrictors
superior
middle
inferior
Steps of deglutition
- Voluntary: Food placed in mouth, bolus is formed, bolus is pressed against the palate and moved to back of the mouth to the oropharynx
- Involuntary: Soft palate is elevated which seals off the nasopharynx, suprahyoid muscles elevate larynx, epiglottis seals off airway, pharynx widens to receive bolus
- Involuntary: Sequential contractions of the pharyngeal constrictors forced food bolus into esophagus; bolus moves down esophagus by peristaltic contractions
What sort of movement do peristaltic contractions make?
wave-like movements
What is aspiration?
food in the airway
What is dysphagia?
difficulty swallowing
